Guide Specs
Steam Make-Up Air Heater, Propeller Type, SK-880-86, Nov 1997
Series SMP was formerly known as Series 86; this guide spec will be updated shortly to reflect the change.
The Steam Make-Up Air Heater, Propeller Type, shall be manufactured by Hartzell Fan, Inc. and identified as Series 86. The design shall be classified as a draw-through type, indoor or outdoor (with minor modifications), packaged configuration for vertical or horizontal installation. Units shall be a modular assembly consisting of a fan section, optional filter section, and a heating section. The fan section will contain an electric motor powered, belt driven, propeller fan. The filter section will contain a framework supporting reusable or throwaway type air filters. The heating section shall consist of a steam-to-air heat exchanger; a control system to activate/deactivate the unit, modulate the outlet air temperature and protect the integrity of the coil, and an access door for service purposes. Vertical units shall also be supplied with a roof hood. Twenty six models shall be available providing 536,000 to 5,360,00 Btuh (using saturated steam at 5 psig and an entering air temperature of 0 ° F.) from 6000 to 60,000 SCFM of airflow, respectively, at 0 to 0.25 in. W.G. external static pressures.
The fan propeller shall be an airfoil design cast of 319 aluminum. The propeller is to be supported by a solid steel spider within an inlet orifice panel. The motor will be an open end protected type with fittings for bearing lubrication. Pillow block ball bearings having extended grease lines shall support the propeller shaft. The motor and propeller shaft sheaves shall be interconnected via oil, heat, and static resistant belts. Belt guards will be furnished as standard.
The steam-to-air heat exchanger shall be a non-freeze type coil design incorporating tube within a tube construction. Coil construction will consist of 5/8 inch O.D. x 0.025 inch copper tubes with helically wound aluminum fins spaced 10 per inch, 2 rows deep. Coil headers shall be constructed of steel with threaded pipe nipples for inlet and outlet connections. The coil casings will be formed of 16 GA galvanized steel sheet. Coils shall be mounted on rails within the housing to facilitate removal.
The housing shall be formed from 12 gauge welded, hot rolled, low carbon steel sheet. Construction shall be modular incorporating bolted and gasketed reinforced flanges at joints interconnecting sections of the housing. The housing shall be protected from corrosion by an application of an industrial grade air dry enamel paint. Each housing shall be provided with a motor operated, center pivoted, inlet shutter, and an access door.
An electromechanical control system with a NEMA 4/12 cabinet shall be furnished. A modulating control scheme consisting of a steam valve with an actuating motor, a discharge air temperature sensor, and an outdoor air temperature compensating controller shall regulate the flow of steam to the coil. A low temperature safety shutdown thermostat shall also be incorporated. Other controls will include an end switch integral to the damper motor; a control transformer; a magnetic, full voltage, fan motor starter; fuses and fuse blocks; and a terminal strip. A remote operating station with indicating lights shall also be included with the unit.
Fans shall be balanced to the American National Standards Institute, Std. S2.19-1989 “Balance Quality of Rotating Rigid Bodies”, Grade G6.3. Fan performance shall be based on tests conducted in Hartzell’s AMCA accredited test laboratory in accordance with AMCA Standard 210 for air and AMCA Standard 300 for sound performance.
